A deductible is a part of the cost you are responsible for when a covered claim occurs. The way it is calculated matters.

Look for the basis of the percentage.

Some deductibles use a dollar amount; others use a percentage of an amount defined by the policy. Check what the percentage applies to rather than assuming it is a percentage of the repair bill.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A 2% deductible applied to a $400,000 dwelling coverage amount:

$400,000 × 0.02 = $8,000

This is an example, not a quote or a determination of coverage. Your policy may use different terms.

Ask before the next storm.

  • Is there a separate wind or hail deductible?
  • What coverage amount is used to calculate it?
  • What roof settlement terms apply?
  • What exclusions or endorsements should I understand?

A premium comparison is more useful when you also compare these details.
